Library Student Assistants work at the Library's front desk, help to maintain the Library’s collections, and perform additional tasks as assigned. Student Assistants are provided with training to help them complete their duties and tasks.
General desk duties
- Check out materials, including document delivery and reserves items
- Process returned materials
- Accept payment for overdue fees, print credits, and photocopying. (Payments for study carrels and lost books should be processed by a library technician.)
- Update accounts in Alma for returning patrons
- Provide directions to other buildings and departments on campus
- Refer patrons to the Research Help services when appropriate
- Consult with staff on duty when difficult questions arise
- Assist patrons with printing, scanning, and photocopying
- Troubleshoot photocopiers and printers
- Answer the phone and take messages when appropriate
- Contact Security if problems (6412) or emergencies (6111) arise and notify staff on duty
- Labelling new materials
Off-desk duties
- Tidy seating areas
- Report problem areas (spills, broken lights, etc.) to manager/library staff
- Shelve returned materials
- “Shelf Read” for correct call number order, misplaced items, etc.
- Tidy the shelves
- Search for missing items
- Assist with general stack maintenance (may include dusting)
Student Assistants are expected to be:

- Able to work with frequent interruptions and rapid change
- Competent in working with a computer and cash register
- Attentive to detail
Rate of pay
Minimum wage plus 4% vacation pay
Period of pay
Every two weeks, on a schedule (unless no shifts are worked)
Length of employment
One semester to start. If a student is successful and enjoys the job, they are welcome to continue working at the Library until graduation.
Probationary period
One month
