Library Student Assistants

How many hours do students work?

New student assistants are usually given one (1) shift a week to start, but more shifts may be added depending on each student's schedule and availability.

Shifts are typically 3-5 hours in length.

Library management generally gives returning student assistants first choice of shifts for each semester. If gaps in the schedule remain, new students will be interviewed and hired.

In addition to a student's regular weekly shift(s), additional shifts may become available if another student worker requires time off, and/or to accommodate special events, holidays, etc.

Even more shifts are available to students during the fall and winter exam period, when the Library runs "Night Owls" extended hours.

Sick Days and Shift Swaps

If a student worker will be late for a shift, they should always call the Library right away (902-457-6250) so that staff know when to expect them and do not worry for their safety.

If a student worker is sick or has an emergency and cannot work their scheduled shift, they must contact the Library as soon as possible (902-457-6250 or circdesk@msvu.ca) so that staff do not worry for their safety and can find someone to fill in.

If a student worker wishes to switch shifts or take the day off, they will be responsible for arranging this with their fellow student assistants. Once coverage has been found, contact the Library (902-457-6250 or circdesk@msvu.ca).

Contact information (email addresses and cellphone numbers) are shared with student assistants each semester and updated as needed.
