Statistics Canada is the national statistical office. The agency ensures Canadians have the key information on Canada's economy, society and environment that they require to function effectively as citizens and decision makers.

Conducted every five years, the census offers a snapshot of Canadian society at a given time. Census data is useful for making observations the about the current status of Canadian society. 

• Census of Population: A detailed statistical portrait of Canada and its people by their demographic, social and economic characteristics.

• Census Program Data Viewer: The Census Program Data Viewer (CPDV), is a web-based data visualization tool that will make statistical information more interpretable by presenting key indicators in a statistical dashboard. The CPDV makes it easy to find many places in Canada, see them on a map, and get basic geographic and sociodemographic data for those places.

Historic Census

• Census of Canada, 1640-1945: Library and Archives Canada holds an extensive collection of Canadian census records from 1640 to 1926, and for Newfoundland from 1671 to 1945. Starting in 1851, most census records included the names of every resident, their country or province of birth, age and many other details.

Statistics by Subject​

The Daily is Statistics Canada's official release bulletin, the Agency's first line of communication with the media and the public. The Daily issues news releases on current social and economic conditions and announces new products. It provides a comprehensive one-stop overview of new information available from Statistics Canada.

Release times

The Daily is released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time each working day. The Daily has been published since 1932, and posted on the Web since June 1995.

The Data Liberation Initiative (DLI) provides licensed access to Statistics Canada Public Use Microdata files (PUMFs), databases and geographic files to students and faculty.

This collection of on-line databases and custom built search and retrieval programs are maintained by Computing in the Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) at the University of Toronto.
