AI (Generative Artificial Intelligence)

Using Generative AI

Before using any generative AI tools for your coursework, always consult your course syllabus and your professor regarding AI use for your assignments. If you are unsure whether AI use is permitted in your course, talk to your professor for clarification and guidance.

Exploring AI tools can help you understand what they can and cannot do, and how they may be helpful or not. Remember that AI tools can lack the critical thinking skills required in your assignments.

If you are permitted to use AI, attribution and acknowledgement are key to ethically using AI. You must cite AI tools when you use them.

Should You Use AI?

The flowchart below (developed by Aleksandr Tiulkanov) can help you determine whether or not using ChatGPT (or another generative AI tool) is appropriate for your task.

Additional Considerations

Some questions to ask yourself when thinking about using generative AI:

  • Have I confirmed that AI use is permitted for my assignment, and are there any restrictions as to how I am allowed to use AI?
  • By using AI, am I losing an opportunity to learn and develop skills and knowledge?
  • Will the AI-generated content appear in my final assignment? If so, how will I show which parts I created and which parts are AI generated?
  • Have I properly cited the AI tool(s) that I have used?
