One of our archives student assistants recently had the opportunity to go through a collection of letters and autographs donated by Laura Carten.
Laura Carten, who wrote under the pseudonym Farmer Smith, was a journalist for the Halifax Chronicle Herald. Her Rainbow Club column began in 1916 with the aim of providing a section in the newspaper that could entertain and amuse children, and included literary talks, biographical sketches of famous women and bedtime stories. A true woman of letters, Laura Carten had many distinguished friends and acquaintances of whom she kept copies of their correspondence. She also collected autographs of “eminent persons”, as she called them.
This collection was catalogued and our student assistant chose a few interesting autographs to highlight on our Library & Archives Instagram page. From Lucy Maud Montgomery to Charles Darwin, we invite you to check out the posts! https://www.instagram.com/msvulibrary
